Precedent Studies A
Objective:
- Seek and investigate existing knowledge on similar scheme and sustainable architecture that respond to basic natural context
- Analyse existing architectural precedents for: - spatial typology (preferably clustered)
- spatial programming
- poetic relationship between built and natural setting
Learning Outcomes:
1. Utilize precedent study as research technique
2. Reflect precedent and techniques of analysis in the critique and development of projects
3. Demonstrate the ability to execute a design integrating the analysis of precedent and context within the process of design
4. Respond to environmental concerns in the development and realization of design projects through the study of precedent.
In this project, in a group of 4, our group selected Naturuum Vattenriket as the precedent study. It is a nature appreciation center with an outdoor gathering space, in which events are held. Hence, the building serves as a communal centre as well.
PRECEDENT STUDY B
POETIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BUILT AND NATURAL SETTINGO
Objectives:
- Analyse design strategies employed in the site that explains the relationship.
- Identify the spatial types and flow of experience
- Study the engagement with senses, manipulation of light, texture and materiality, scale and proportion
Learning Outcomes:
- Be able to identify the key circulation, select at least 5 experiential spaces to study
- co relate the plan to one section that appealed to us the most.
- Give comments on relationship between inside/ outside, volumes and scale of space, variation and hierarchy of space.
The second precedent study is way different from the former one, as we get to experience the space directly. During our 2 nights and 3 days stay we appreciate the architecture of Belum Rainforest Resort and the surrounding context, which blended well with the building. We explored and analysed the features in Belum Resort that makes it outstanding and how the sustainable features are applied.
SITE ANALYSIS
(Whole class group project)
Our sub group is given the task to produce the site plan. Hence upon arrival on the site, Sepang Environmental Interpretive Centre, we proceeded to measure the area after the briefing. Our sub group was also given the task to help making the physical model as well. During which, we made 1:250 model of some of the surrounding buildings and also the mangrove trees models, using satay stick.
Objectives
-
To identify and analyse environmental and social needs of a site
-
To propose for Nature Appreciation Center
Learning Outcomes
-
Identify site condition, topography, vegetation and socio- cultural events
-
Identify environmental features that influence architectural design
-
Identify and analyse environment and social needs of a site as basis for design proposal
(individual)
Individually, we are to propose a Nature Appreciation Centre based on the previous precedent study and social needs from the site analysis.
NATURE APPRECIATION CENTRE
Objectives
-
Develop awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design.
-
Develop the student’s ability to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as make poetry with the buildings.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the subject, students will be able to:
-
Apply ideas of environmental sustainability in design
-
Design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context which impact on users’ experiences
-
Combine the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), and the users’ experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context.
-
Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology.
