ARC 3512 Building Technology 1
Project 1: Alternative Construction Solutions
Group
In a group of 6 people we are to choose one of the member's previous semester design that we want to work on for the first project. We shall then perform at least 50 percent modifications to the original construction systems and to replace with different yet appropriate, more complex or recent building technology. Modifications are to performed on the following building components: i) Floor system, ii) Wall system, iii) Roof system and (iv) to include a new basement level.
Objectives:
-
To encourage analytical and critical study of the principles, practices and details of construction technology in the existing building.
-
To encourage students to explore alternative construction systems
-
To adapt and implement the alternative construction systems into the students’ design.
-
To develop the students’ skills in producing working drawings.
Learning Outcomes:
-
Identify and collect relevant research data.
-
Explain a set of architectural and structural documentation.
-
Relate basic structural elements and structural principles in construction.
-
Analyse and document construction methods and materials
Project 2: Advanced Roof & Industrialised Building System
Group
In a group of 6, we are to perform a case study (in our case: Taylor's University) on a building to study its i) advanced roof system and ii) IBS construction system. We are to produce a report comprising of an introduction of the building, identification of all the advanced roof components and its location inside the building, identification of IBS systems and a clear indication of where it is used, and also the identification of the connections an djoints between different components.
Individual
Individually, we are to use out previous (design studio 4) building plans to conduct the following:
- modification and simplication of the plan to make it suitable to be constructed using an advanced roof and IBS construction systems.
- applying appropriate advanced roof and the most suitable IBS systems to construct the building.
- produce: plans, elevations, sections, and a detail sectional drawing of the building to show all the roof and IBS components.
- describe about the construction systems used and include images and sizes.
- provide in the report, some descriptions about the building and the construction system concerning energy efficiency and ecological impac as well as the embodied energy calculations.
Objectives:
-
To develop students’ understanding in the advanced roof and different types of IBS construction method.
-
To apply appropriate roof system and IBS construction method in their own design.
-
To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of advanced roof and IBS construction process.
-
To develop students’ understanding in matters related to energy efficiency and ecological impact.
-
To foster good communication skills among group members through proper delegation of works and also a proper academic report.
Learning Outcomes:
-
Identify and collect relevant research data.
-
Evaluate existing construction system and detailing of the selected project.
-
Critique issues pertaining to construction principles, materials, techniques, process of assembly and detailing.
-
Critique issues pertaining to energy efficiency, embodied energy as well as ecological impact.
