Project 1 Lighting and Acoustic Performance Evaluation and Design

Group/Individual

This project aims to expose and introduce students to acoustic design and acoustical requirements in a suggested space. In this assignment, as a group of 6 people we analysed a cafe located in ss15, Absolut Coffee Stop, and study about their lighting and acoustic. In terms of acoustic we studied how the space is able to preserve and enhance the desired sound and at the same time eliminate noise and undesired sound, while in terms of lighting we are to study how the lighting of the building itself along with the lighting of the activities it contains make up a unified design concept.

Objective:

  • To understand the day-lighting & lighting and acoustic characteristics & acoustic requirement in a suggested space.

  • To determine the characteristics and function of day-lighting & artificial lighting and sound & acoustic within the intended space.

  • To critically report and analyse the space.

Learning Outcome:

  • Able to produce a complete documentation on analysis of space in relation to lighting requirement eg. natural and artificial lighting. (Pictures, sketches and drawing) and analysis of factors which effects the lighting design of a space.

  • Explore and apply understanding of building physic eg. Lighting towards building / construction technology and building materials on existing building projects.

  • Able to evaluate and explore the improvisation by using current material and technology in relevance to present construction industry

  • Basic understanding and analysis of lighting layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Lumen method and PSALI.

  • Basic understanding and analysis of acoustic design layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Reverberation time and sound transmission coefficient.

On site assignment: Lighting and Acoustic

The aim of this project is to create our understandign of the principles of lighting and acoustic in the context physical environment. It ocmprises daylighting and artificial lighting systems, as well as the strategies for internal and external noise management and room acoustics. This project is carried out in a group of 6 people who are from the same site (Site A Jalan Tun HS Lee).

Objectives:

  • To understand the practical application and manual testing methods of various lighting and acoustic performance.

  • To determine the key technical specifications of the different light sources, understand and observe the differences in the technical properties. To determine the key technical specifications of the different acoustic technical properties.

  • To understand the concepts of colour rendering index and colour temperature and influences on human perception of colour properties of objects.

  • To understand the concepts of human perception of acoustic properties of objects.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Basic understanding in analysis and evaluation of artificial lighting and acoustic properties.

  • Ability to compare the qualitative characteristics of the artificial lighting and acoustic properties and apply the understanding onto different architectural and interior space requirements based on

    functions.

Project 2: Integration with Design Studio 5

The aim of this project is to integrate our understanding of lighitng and acoustic principles in the context of our final design project of Studio 5.

Objectives:

• To be able to show understanding of lighting and acoustics principles in their final design.

• To be able to solve design problems in relation to sustainability issues (natural lighting, site analysis).

• To be able to design spaces incorporating lighting and acoustics (when necessary).

Learning Outcomes:

• Produce site analysis which document, interpret and analyze the site context in relation to lighting and acoustics.

• Identify and analyze functional needs through case studies to inform of lighting and acoustics.
