Building Construction 2

Project 1 - Understanding Forces in Skeletal Structure

An exercise to analyse and practice how skeletal structure works. Skeletal strcuture is one of the mostly used type of construction these days. It provides load bearing resistance of the structure as well as supports the secondary elements.

Learning Outcomes

Through the process of designing a structure using only ice cream sticks as the main material, I am able to name some implications of construction system in design. I understood how skeletal structure reacts under a loading and how the load transfer process comes about. I am also able to differentiate between stability, strength, and stiffness and the factors which might affect it, and how to manipulate a skeletal structure to solve design problems. After all, I learnt to apply construction in design.

Project 2 Understanding Frces in Solid Structure and Surface Structure

Creating a smaller scale model of an existing building with unique construction system. This enhance our understanding about solid and surface structure highlighting on how the structural systems practically works. A booklet is also to be produced to compile the process of model making, an outline of the original building and how the structure works.

Learning Outcomes

To be able to identify the basic structural systems in constructions. During the model making process I learnt about how surface structure differs with solid structure. By pointing out how the load is transferred in a structural system, the type of the system can be identified. Like the previous project, the outcome of this one is also to be able to aply construction systems in design.
